GMail Warning

Here's news you probably don't want to hear.

Apparently Google's mail service is vulnerable to contact list hacking. As reported by Tech Reads by simply logging in to GMail and visiting a website, a malicious website can steal your contact list and all its details. The problem occurs because Google stores the contact list data in a Javascript file. So far the attack only works on Firefox, and doesn't appear to work in Opera or Internet Explorer 7. IE6 was un-tested as of now.

We all know Google. We all love Google. We use Google for search engine marketing, to go shopping, to give us the latest news and statistics and nearly everything we want to know. And it's inevitable that Google, too, might have a bug or two. The people who work there are brilliant, but they're not perfect.

Yet it's perhaps a bit of a wakeup call. Those of us who make our livings on the Net, especially those of us who use email and websites to make our living on the Net, need to remember that putting too much trust in any one company or technology is a step in the direction of 1984 - and it's Orwell's version, not Apple's, that we're talking about.

And that's our take on the news today!
