Is SEO Rocket Science?

Sounds like some people think it is.

At least, that's part of the title of Danny Sullivan's recent article in which he complains that SEO isn't taken seriously enough:

"Look, I am absolutely sick and tired of the SEO community forgetting that what they know and do is NOT second nature to the vast majority of people. I'm not talking spamming or black hat stuff. I'm talking about that "simple" stuff, the loads of things that can make a real difference to how well a site does in the search results. Ignore these things on purpose or accidentally, and you miss out on valuable traffic."

On the other side of the aisle we have Kevin Lee on Click Z, protesting that SEO experts are perhaps taking themselves a little too seriously:

Just because the understanding of what constitute best practices in SEO isn't widely appreciated (particularly among newer Web masters or Web marketers), this doesn't constitute sufficient evidence for SEO being rocket science."

As usual, the truth is somewhere in the middle. No, SEO isn't rocket science - let's be honest (and correct) here: only rocket science is, in fact, rocket science. It's also not magic, which appears to be yet another stream of though among new webmasters. What is is is a discipline like any other that can be learned well or not well, implemented well or not well, and taught well or not so well. Like most other disciplines, the success or failure of SEO is largely in the hands of the "expert" providing the services.

And that's our take on the news today!
