Mobile Marketing

We've been seeing a lot in the news about various mobile technologies that are taking the social world, and in particular the social world of the young, by storm. This week, Postbubble is discussing various Web-based applications that send out messages to mobile phones —p anything from classifieds (in case you really need to buy a toaster while you're on the train), to locating friends when one is out and about, to sending one mass-mailing text message to as many cell phones as the user would like, all at once.

What does all this mean for eMarketing?

At the moment, not a lot. Businesses are slow to change their marketing paradigms, and many of us are still most comfortable doing our work at our desks (or at least on our laptops!) rather than peering at a tiny screen in a noisy street and trying to make sense of the data presented there.

Will that change? Most assuredly. People entering the business world now have been regularly using mobile solutions for several years and will be constantly thinking of more ways to multitask using cell phones, Blackberries, and the like. So things may be changing whether we like it or not.

And it will be a good thing. E-messaging needs to use all the tools at our disposal. What if you could check the number of click-throughs from yesterday's emailing from your mobile as you head in to work this morning? What if you could update your BDA from your mobile at the airport? And what about the dozens of applications that we can't even think of, yet, because we're still stuck in the same paradigm we've been using in the past?

Mobile messaging will be a strong component of e-marketing, sooner rather than later.

And that's our take on the news today!
