Monopoly, Anyone?

Yahoo! will be laying off seven percent of its workforce — 1,000 people — in the near future "in an effort," says columnist Mark Walsh, "to offset financial woes."

In the meantime, there are those who believe that Yahoo! should get out of the search business altogether. "Google, meanwhile," writes Walsh, "increased its stranglehold on search, going from a 70.5% to a 76.6% share. The company captured nearly all of the search spending growth in the fourth quarter of 2007, compared to the year-earlier quarter."

Is this a good thing? While it can be argued that Google consistently comes up with innovative, hip, and useful tools and applications, one has to be concerned any time a monopoly starts to exist — there starts being a "my way or the highway" mentality that is not good for either customer relations or, in the end, innovations.

In the meantime, while we all do have to bow to Google's popularity as we conduct search marketing services, let's not forget the smaller, innovative companies that are still operating against the odds. Our pick? Ask.com, the search engine that could. Check it out!

And that's our take on the news today!
