Google's Sandbox

While most of you have sites that have been around for a while, the time will come when you want to launch a new venture, a subdivision, or simply an additional site. At that point, you'll need to know about Google's sandbox.

Sandbox is a term that Google itself doesn't actually use; it's employed by the rest of us. It explains why new websites rank poorly chez Google; Google typically withholds the high ranking ability of newly launched websites for two to four months, leaving the website in the sandbox to play alone so it can grow up enough to play with the other kids. 

So if you're launching a new website, know that you won't show up in Google's ranking for a while. But there are things that you can do to use your time there wisely:

  1. Content is king: use this time to write SEO-friendly content, a lot of them, so that you'll hit the ground running when you're allowed out on the playground.
  2. You cannot measure how well your pages are optimized, but you can still use this time to optimize them, individually, for the keywords you'll be seeking to rank for.
  3. Build links: you cannot start too soon.

So if you're launching a new website, know that you won't show up in Google's ranking for a while. But there are things that you can do to use your time there wisely:
