Seeing The World Through Google's Eyes

Google’s "eyes" are different from yours.

This may seem a little obvious, but to many people it's not. What seems to be correct from a logical point of view is not necessarily what is correct from a search engine optimization perspective, and in order to rank with Google, you first have to think like Google.

We are going to give you a pair of corrective lenses to help you see the search world through Google's eyes. Here are a few examples:

  1. Search engines don't read flash. You may think your flash is pretty and attracts visitors to your site, but it's a wasted effort as far as search engines are concerned.

  2. Quantity is — sometimes — more important than quality. Yes, your content needs to be relevant, valuable, and appropriate; but there has to be a lot of it, too. It's a little like playing the lottery: the more pages you have, the better chance you have of "winning."

  3. "Widget" and "widgets" may look the same to you, but they're completely different animals in the search engines' view. People may enter your keyword as a singular or as a plural in the search field, so make sure that you have both of them covered on your optimized pages.

  4. Frames are not your friend. Sure, from a design point of view they're easy to use — but search engines don't like them, don't read them, are positively turned off by them.

Human beings are generally less predictable and more interesting than search engines. Make sure that you familiarize yourself with the way that search engines look at website design and website copy so that you don't "do the wrong thing" through a lack of understanding. Or, better still, engage a search engine optimization specialist to help you!
